Typography for Lawyers

Typography is not something they teach in law school; I should know, in just over one two week I will graduate from Arizona State University’s College of Law. However, typography is important, even though it has not been traditionally valued as such. But why?

The answer to that question can be found on a new website called Typography for Lawyers. The site was created by a lawyer named Matthew Butterick who is a former font designer. In particular, Butterick says the following as to why typography is important:

Typography is always important because presentation is always important. Just like a gesture can punctuate a point in court, good typography can reinforce the meaning of your text. Good typography helps your reader move beyond your words and into your meaning. Conversely, bad typography can mislead your reader and undermine your meaning.

This principle or persuasion not only holds true for attorneys, but for anybody whose goal is to persuade others to act in a particular way; in other words this principle is applicable to nearly everyone.
