Quantity vs. Quality (Authority/Relevance)

Since its inception, Google has preached the importance of relevance relating to backlinks. Because of this, many SEOs have placed much emphasis, perhaps too much, upon a backlink’s relevance and too little emphasis on a backlink’s authority. Why does this matter? As of recent, I have noticed that Google’s algorithm seems to be placing more weight on authority and less weight on relevance. Over the next few weeks, I’ll try and put together some empirical results supporting this theory.
