Exposure Drives Traffic, not Just Quality Content

One of the principles that Google espouses is that a site will eventually gain the recognition that it deserves in relation to the quality of it’s content. In some cases this correct, however, great content is most often not enough by itself. Moreover, lack of recognition for quality content is typically caused by a lack of exposure.

How does a site get enough exposure for it’s great content? Well there are many methodologies to do this, but there is one that stands out head and shoulders above the rest: Twitter.

Even with the rampant increase of spam on Twitter, there is still an unspoken code amongst most active Twitter users: if you follow me, I will follow you. Moreover, this allows a site to increase it exposure immediately if the site Tweets links to it’s quality content. However, there is one very important caveat: the Twitter users a site follows must be interested in the tweets and content the site offers.

Although there is no way to ensure that all the Twitter users a site follows will reciprocally follow the site and that they will be interested in what the site has to say, however, there are ways to increase your odds.

One method is to find authorities in the site’s industry and use some sort of automated process to automatically follow that user’s followers. In general, that user’s followers are more likely to be interested in what the site has to say. However, there are a number of drawbacks to this method, specifically, the site will inevitably follow some spammers. Further, it is important not to have too large a discrepancy between the number of Twitter users a site follows and the number followers a site’s Twitter account has.
